Q. What is Stoneware?
Stoneware is made from clays that fire to a tan or light gray color. Baked at very high temperatures, stoneware becomes nonporous and as hard as steel. It is decorated in a variety of ways from salt glaze to slip decorated. Working with stoneware demands great expertise, and is in fact becoming a lost art.
Q. Is there lead, or any other hazardous material in your pottery?
Many metals are used in the production of our pottery; from the iron in the clay to the copper and cobalt found in some of our most popular glaze colors. All of these potentially hazardous materials have been rendered inert due to the extreme temperatures that they endure during the firing process. Any Lead or other potentially hazardous materials are rendered harmless and are essentially vaporized once the kiln reaches temperatures above 1200 degrees. Most of these hazardous materials have low melting points which is in part, why they are dangerous and volatile.
Q. What is the difference between Stoneware and Earthenware/Terra Cotta pottery?
The difference lies in the firing.
STONEWARE is usually fired above 2,200 degrees
S F. EARTHENWARE is fired below 2,000 degrees
SF. Example: Greenhouse clay pots, Raku. Firing above 2200 degrees F bonds the clay molecules so that the clay does not absorb water or moisture. On the other hand Earthenware and Terra Cotta do absorb moisture.
Q. Can my stoneware pottery be outside year-round?
Yes. Best Price Pots pottery is designed to be outside year-round. As mentioned previously, stoneware does not absorb moisture so it will not crack in below freezing temperatures. Your investment in stoneware pottery will last many years beyond Terra Cotta and other varieties of Earthenware.
Q. Do I need drainage holes for my container garden?
Unless you are making a water garden, you will need holes in your container. Some of our containers do not have holes but they are easy to drill using a masonry bit.
